Thematic Areas

1. AGRICULTURE, FOOD SECURITY AND RESILIENCE BUILDING INITIATIVES

MDTC specific projects contributes supports agriculture development and food and nutrition security through improved farming technologies, infrastructure development, good crop and livestock farming practices and farmer transformational trainings. MDTC development focus supports initiatives that include Open Pollinated Varieties seed multiplication, nutrition and herbal gardens, livestock development, rehabilitation/construction of small dams, irrigation schemes, dip tanks, schools and clinics. This strengthen community resilience, food security, nutrition and income for enhanced livelihoods.

  • Small grain production and seed multiplication project.

MDTC started to work with farmers since 2012 with the aim of promoting production of seed at local level as well as enhancing food security. MDTC successfully trained and supported farmers in small grain production seed multiplication. Farmers are engaged into production, linked with private seed companies on contractual agreements. The public -private partnership in community- based seed production opened a comparative advantage to participating farmers, since they receive income in bulk enabling them to make bigger investments at household level.

  • Asset creation and rehabilitation

MDTC in partnership with funding partners (USAID/WFP, LED, TDH, Italian Agency since 2012 to date) and private sector rehabilitated and created assets aimed at improving both community and households’ livelihoods these include small dams, nutrition gardens, irrigation schemes, fodder gardens, dip tanks, boreholes and gully reclamation. Projects were identified from the Community Action Plans (CAPs) and Seasonal Livelihoods Programming (SLP) that were developed through Community Level Participatory Planning (CLPP) in 2012/13 with support from WFP. Some of the projects were derived from RDC District Development Plans.

Household Level Activities

  • Creating Opportunities for Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock Development (CROPS)

MDTC in consortium with Cesvi, Ifarm, Matopos Research, Terres Des Homes implemented the CROPS programme which aimed at improving communities’ livelihoods through rehabilitation of assets and drilling of boreholes.

Irrigation Development

  • Zambuko Resilience Initiative-Livestock component

The project is implemented in Mwenezi district reaching out to a total of 1,500 households and the focus is on improving small livestock production The project is strengthening and diversifying livelihoods amongst the communities to recurrent shocks. Key activities include: provision of improved goat breed, provision of boschveld chickens, construction of improved low cost goat and chicken housing units, fodder production and processing and trainings.

Zambuko Resilience Initiative

  • BRIDGE (Building Resilience Inclusively in Drier Geographic Environs)

The project is being implemented in Beitbridge district with the overall objective of building the resilience of smallholder farmers in drought prone communal areas to shocks and stress. The project seeks to increase the participation of CSOs in preventing and mitigating risks and vulnerabilities caused by drought and other climatic conditions. The underlying specific project objective is to strengthen the capacities of key community-based institutions and structures in addressing resilience at community level. MDTC is enhancing the capacity of IMCs, DCAs, DRR Committees and LDCs to influence key policies related to agriculture and resilience.

Bridge Programme

  • Rural Resilience Initiative R4 Programme in Masvingo

The Rural Resilience Initiative Programme is being implemented in Masvingo district. The initiative seeks to strengthen the capacity of farmers and foster adoption of resilient activities for sustainable development. The main objective is to enhance food security and enterprise diversification to rural farmers, so as to reduce risks due to climate change.

2. VOCATIONAL SKILL TRAININGS

MDTC provides vocational skills training to rural men, women and youth in participation in skills development for self-reliance. Vocational skills training programme include: building, carpentry, dressmaking, metal work, leather tanning, tie and dye and machine maintenance. MDTC is registered by the ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education to administer HEXCO exams at National Foundation Certificate (NFC). Vocational skills training has left the community of Mwenezi district with more than 100 skilled artisans who are competing at job markets in and outside Zimbabwe and more than 10 000 people with skill in different trades. This resulted in establishment of Commercial Oriented Production training (COPT) which exposed trainees to high learning facility with orientation to intensified production reaching viable markets.

3. HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE

  • Lean Season Assistance

MDTC has reached over 190 0000 assisted people in both Mwenezi and Chiredzi districts to have access to food assistance and engaging in complementary livelihood activities so as to gradually prepare them for offset from the need for seasonal food assistance.

4. MARKET LINKAGES

MDTC facilitates creation of farmer groups for project intervention and provide market linkages through contract farming with companies such as Seedco, Zimbabwe Super Seeds (ZSS), livestock feed supply companies, National foods, pesticide companies, Sygenta and produce.

5. PROMOTION OF IMPROVED EDUCATION AND RURAL HEALTH CENTRES

The skills acquired are from vocational skills training are used in the construction of classroom blocks and rural     health facilities in the districts of operation.

6. CROSSCUTTING ISSUES

MDTC integrates crosscutting issues of gender, HIV/AIDS, Covid 19 and environment.

7. MONITORING EVALUATION AND ICT

The monitoring, evaluation and ICT is responsible for the internal monitoring and evaluation system for MDTC projects to ensure resources are effectively utilized and managed. The M&E ensures organizational information is synthesized and promotion material developed to support marketing of interventions. MDTC produce weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports to the board, stakeholders and donors.
